‘I HAVE to lose weight’
Why losing weight for the sake of losing weight doesn’t work.
It’s a daily occurrence for a health professional to hear a client say ‘I need to lose weight’. And when prompted you will find out that these individuals have done the rounds, they have been on every diet possible from `Cabbage Soups` to drinking some weird and wonderful shakes to counting points. They have even clocked a few miles on the treadmill and reluctantly pushed the odd dumbbell overhead.
Quote: ‘’I used to go to the gym but I hated it’’
And did they lose weight? Absolutely, yes, stones of it.
And did they regain it all again? Absolutely, yes, stones of it.
So what happens to these individuals who have certainly shown determination when it comes to wanting to shed pounds?
There are two main factors why this form of weight loss is never going to lead to permanent weight loss. The obvious one is that diets in general are not sustainable and are mostly damaging to our health and to our metabolism.
However another reason that is not understood well enough yet – it is that many overweight people enter weight loss programmes simply because they know `they have to` and not because they are convinced and have the belief that this new healthy weight will bring about some real positive changes to their lives.
My experience has shown that in order for any one of us to affect our body in a real
positive way we as individuals need to ` buy ` into our personal ability.
We need to connect our mind to our physical existence
And the best way to go about this and make achieving weight loss sustainable is to become crystal clear about the outcome of this change.
It is paramount to be able to visualize a personal goal that is connected to your weight loss goal.
Without your goal you won’t know what you are aiming for. Imagine yourself going on a vacation, you even make it to the airport but you don’t know where you are travelling to. This is like embarking on a weight loss programme, you even started cutting back on calories but you don’t know the name of your destination.
‘You can’t win a football match if there are no goal posts to aim at’.
Now you could argue that most individuals know exactly how much weight they want to lose. But this is precisely my point, wanting to lose weight simply for the sake of having to lose weight, will never lead to sustainable weight loss because the individual wanting to lose is actually mentally disconnected from the physical process of losing weight.
Weight loss brings about changes to your life and your lifestyle; the way other people will see you, the confidence it will give you, the improved energy levels you will experience. Your appearance will change; the clothes you wear will change and so on. All those changes can open up a whole new dimension and bring about entirely new aspects to your life.
My Top Tip to achieving permanent sustainable weight loss for life:
If you are planning to embark on a weight loss programme be clear about the desired outcome of the forthcoming programme. With that in mind you will find the inspiration and motivation to strive towards your optimum weight.
Spend time manifesting a very clear picture of your goal in your mind.
Then use the outcome goal as your motivation.
